New Uniforms
We are very pleased to announce the launch of our staff uniform.
Uniforms have been purchased by the Partners for all our administrative staff. This is a direct result of both verbal patient feedback and CQC (Care Quality Commission) guidance so all our Practice staff are easily recognisable to you all - not just our receptionists on the front desk.
With an increasing list of patients, now at 15,150, this has meant recruitment of additional doctors & admin staff and 2016 seemed the right time to take this important step. I hope you all agree that they look very smart.

Practice Manager's Blog - January 2016
Our E-Consultation service went live on Monday 11th January, giving patients another option when wishing to contact their surgery. This service has many advantages to both patients and the surgery.
For patients the system is simple and convenient to use. It is a great option if you are not sure if you need to see a doctor or, for example, just need some test results.
To get started go to the home page on the surgery website and click the red button on the purple ‘contact our doctors online’ banner. Find your health condition and fill out a simple online questionnaire.
A GP or another member of staff (if not a medical query) will get back to you with appropriate advice and treatment options.
We hope you will enjoy using this fabulous new service and would certainly welcome any feedback.

Practice Manager's Blog - December 2015
We have had a number of changes and welcomed some new doctors at both Wistaria and Milford Surgeries recently.
Drs Toni Benning and David Fowler became partners in October, Dr Benning at Wistaria and Dr Fowler at Milford and therefore some patients have been transferred to their lists.
Dr Laura Sheldrake and Dr Lydia Cheung have joined us as ST2 Registrars and are fully qualified doctors who are gaining experience in GP surgeries. Dr Sheldrake is seeing patients at Wistaria and Dr Cheung at Milford.
You may have had an appointment at Wistaria Surgery with Dr Charlotte Holdsworth recently – she is a foundation year 2 doctor and has now left us to work in A&E as part of her ongoing training. We may well see her again in years to come as a GP Registrar.
Finally, we have been joined at Wistaria by Dr Sally Watson, an experienced GP originally from North Wales, who has returned from working abroad for several years and is returning to medicine in the United Kingdom with Dr Gareth Morris as her mentor in the early stages of her time with us at Wistaria.
If you have online access you will see in the appointments section which doctors are available at your surgery as well as your usual doctor. Please make sure you chose the correct view for either Wistaria or Milford before selecting your appointment.
Please contact us with your name and date of birth if you would like to register for online access.

The Practice at Lymington Hospital
The Practice at Lymington Hospital is now open and taking appointments. A partnership was formed between seven local GP practices, including Wistaria and Milford Surgeries. Our pilot was chosen by NHS England to be amongst 37 schemes nationally to test new ways of organising, delivering and involving people in the design of local healthcare. This is an additional service to the one provided by Wistaria and Milford Surgeries. Patients should consider “The Practice” as a branch of their own surgery.
Patients from any of the seven local practices can book appointments at The Practice. They offer a good choice of appointments as they are open seven days a week from 8.00am to 8.00pm, so is particularly useful for those needing evening and weekend appointments. If you should need help outside of these hours you should still telephone 111.
You may now be wondering if you should now use your normal GP or The Practice. If you need an appointment during normal surgery hours (8.30am to 6.00pm, Monday to Friday) please give us a call and our receptionists will direct you to The Practice if this is appropriate. When Wistaria and Milford are closed you can call The Practice at Lymington Hospital directly during their opening hours (see above) on 01590 630545 for an appointment with them.

Practice Manager's Blog - October 2015
Electronic Prescription Service (EPS)
GP practices started using electronic prescriptions in July 2013 and now nearly 90% of GPs in Hampshire use this service.
EPS is an NHS-funded service in England which gives you the chance to change how your GP sends your prescription to the healthcare professional you choose to get your medication or appliances from.
If you currently collect your repeat prescriptions from your GP you will not have to visit your GP practice to pick up your paper prescription. Instead your GP will send it electronically to the place you choose, saving you time. You will have more choice about where to get your medication from because it can be collected from a pharmacy near where you live, work or shop. You may also not have to wait as long at the pharmacy as there will be more time for your repeat prescriptions to be prepared before you arrive.
This service is very flexible and you can change your nominated pharmacy or cancel this service at any time if your circumstances should change. Also you do not have to use your nomination on every occasion – if you don’t wish for your nomination to be used on a particular prescription you should let your GP practice know before the prescription is issued.
Please click on the link below to see a patient nomination request form, which you would complete to utilise this service.

Transforming care in the New Forest with Better Local Care.
Earlier this year, a partnership between seven local GP practices, including Wistaria and Milford Surgery, in the South West New Forest and Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust, were chosen by NHS England to be amongst 37 schemes nationally to test new ways of organising, delivering and involving people in the design of local healthcare.

Practice Manager's Blog - June 2015
In the second of our Practice Manager's Blogs we have some information regarding self care.
The demands on general practice have increased significantly over the last few years. In 2014 there were 370,000,000 consultations compared to 240,000,000 ten years previously. This increase is much greater than the demand in Accident and Emergency and puts pressure on NHS resources.
This is where we can all make a difference! It is very difficult to reverse the trend in rising demand, but if patients have the knowledge to know when they need to see their GP, if they can use an alternative service or simply help themselves at home this will take off some of the strain on our valuable services.
Please click on the link below to see a simple guide to self care options.
Choose Well
There are many alternatives to seeing your GP including the following:-
Local Pharmacy – can provide advice on many minor ailments and conditions such as skin rashes, impetigo, eye infections, athlete’s foot, diarrhoea, thrush and uncomplicated UTIs, coughs, colds, sore throats, blocked nose, hay fever, ear ache, teething and nappy rash, cold sores and mouth ulcers.
Minor Injuries Unit – can help if you are suffering from a minor scald or burn, foreign bodies, ie splinter, broken bone, minor head injury (eg from a low fall), cuts, grazes, wounds, muscle or joint injury, sprain, strain, skin complaint – insect/animal/human bite or sting, localised allergic reactions and infections, minor eye injuries and infections. Emergency contraception is also available.
Lymington MIU is open every day from 8am-9pm, telephone 01590 663101.
Health Visitor - you can go straight to your named health visitor for advice and guidance on baby, children and parenting issues such as growth and development of your baby/child, childhood conditions, allergies and infections, breastfeeding, bottle feeding and weaning, teething, post-natal depression and parental mental and physical health, child behavioural issues, eg sleeping, eating, tantrums, support with parenting, family health and relationships.
District Nurse – if you are a housebound patient on the local district nurse caseload you can get direct help with wound care, end of life care, continence assessment, care at home after hospital discharge and equipment assessment.
NHS Anxiety and Depression Service – if you’re struggling with any of the following problems you can refer yourself directly to this service – panic attacks, depression or low mood, anxiety, excessive worry, phobias, agoraphobia, obsessive compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, health anxiety, bulimia, social anxiety/shyness. They will also let your GP know.
Sexual Health Clinics – for advice and treatments including contraceptive advice and implants, tests for sexually transmitted diseases, symptoms such as vaginal discharge.
Podiatry/Foot Care – patients aged 60+ can refer themselves for foot related conditions such as ingrowing toenails, verrucae (but not corns, calluses or nail cutting), painful foot problems or foot abnormalities.
999 Only for Life Threatening Conditions – these include severe chest pain, severe difficulty breathing, choking, suspected stroke, unconsciousness, severe loss of blood, severe burns or scalds, drowning, severe allergic reactions, fitting on concussion.
And if you aren’t sure – for advice on health conditions and the availability of local services you can dial NHS 111 at any time, day or night.
Take a look at our Clinics and Services section on the website to find dentists, pharmacies and other local services.

Target Training for GPs and Nurses - 2nd June
We have joined the West Hampshire Target scheme which brings GPs and Practice Nurses together twice a year to learn new treatments and develop new skills. This training improves the services that we provide for you.
Our GPs and Nurses need to attend Target training for an afternoon on Tuesday 2nd June. This means the Surgery will not have any GPs or nurses on duty during this time but our Out of Hours Service will cover. You can use this service by dialling 111.
The surgery reception and telephone lines will remain open as usual during this afternoon for any routine patient enquiries, prescriptions and booking appointments.
29/05/15

During this time Dr Robert Whitmey will be covering her patients and clinics. He is an experienced GP and we are really lucky that he will be joining us for this time. We hope you will all join us in welcoming him.
As with all Milford patients you also have the option to book with Dr David Fowler, Dr Camilla Janssen or Dr Virginia French.

Review of Appointments with Doctors and Nurses
The Practice continues to review its appointments and access to our doctors and nurses. In particular we have made some changes to the structure of our nursing appointments - this is to ensure that patients medical needs are met such as dressings, removal of sutures, review of long term conditions such as diabetes, asthma, etc and we have enough 'on the day' appointments to take referrals from our doctors for urgent work such as ECGs.
We are now limiting the amount of ear syringing & travel slots, as these are not considered medically urgent. This will mean that a certain amount of slots are available each week with our Practice Nurses and could mean that the wait for an ear syringing or travel appointment may increase slightly. We have updated our advice sheets to patients so you are aware of other options available to you.

The NHS Friends and Family test is an important opportunity for you to give feedback on the services that we provide for your care and treatment.
When you have had an appointment with us you will be asked to answer the following question - How likely are you to recommend our GP practice to friends and family if they needed similar care or treatment? You will be invited to respond to the question by choosing one of six options ranging from extremely likely to extremely unlikely. You will also have the opportunity to explain your answer. You may be asked to answer the question by completing a postcard or via this website.

Pneumococcal Vaccinations
From January patients who are aged 65 or over are being offered pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPV). This is a one off vaccination offering long term protection and is very effective at protecting against serious forms of pneumococcal infection such as pneumonia. If our records indicate that you have not previously had a pneumococcal vaccination we will be contacting you to invite you to attend one of our clinics.
Further information on the benefits of pneumococcal vaccination can be found on leaflets in the surgery or at www.nhs.uk/Conditions/vaccinations/Pages/pneumococcal-vaccination.aspx

Personalised care - named doctor for patients over 75
- GPs will oversee personalised care plans, integrating all services for patients with complex health and care needs. This is in order to reduce unplanned hospital admissions, which should benefit the patients concerned and the NHS. Patients in this group will be contacted in July to start this process.
- All patients aged 75 and over will have a named GP, as will those with complex health needs, responsible for co-ordinating their care. They will develop and regularly review personalised care plans for these patients. More information on this can be found at http://www.nhs.uk/news/2013/11November/Pages/The-return-of-the-proper-family-doctor.aspx
- Patients who are over 75 will be informed in person, by e-mail or in a letter who your named doctor is. You will not be surprised that this is your usual doctor!

Do you look after, help or support someone?
Let your GP know if you are a carer. GPs would like to know about the carers who attend the surgery so they can offer the right help, support and information.
Would it help to have more information or talk to someone about your needs as a carer? Carers Together can provide information, advice, support, advocacy or a free Carers Information Pack. Contact them on 01794 519495; admin@carerstogether.org.uk or visit their website www.carerstogether.org.uk.
More information, and a form to register as a carer with your GP, is available on the Carers Direct link on the right of the screen.
